Bromyard garden work splits two ways: compact, often walled plots behind the black-and-white timber of High Street, Broad Street and Market Square, and bigger rural gardens out along the Frome valley, where hop-yards and cider orchards still shape the ground. North and west the lanes climb: Edwyn Ralph and Pencombe among sheep ground, Bredenbury along the A44 ridge — exposed gardens where a tidy hedge, cut at the right time of year, matters more than a tender border.

The WR6 edge — Bringsty Common, Brockhampton and Whitbourne

East over the Downs to the WR6 fringe: Bringsty Common's cottage gardens sit on the open common itself, with Brockhampton's parkland and Whitbourne in the Teme valley beyond.

Orchard country sets the seasonal rhythm here. Winter and early spring are for pruning old apple and perry trees while they sleep; autumn brings windfall and leaf clearing on top of the last cuts of the year. In between it's the steady round — from the first cut of spring onwards: mowing, edges, borders kept on top of, hedges cut with the clippings bagged and gone.

Yes — dormant-season pruning through winter and early spring, windfall and brash cleared in autumn. Old cider-apple and perry trees around Bromyard respond better to a steady prune year on year than one big hack. I'll bag or stack the brash, whichever suits.
