Your gardener in Chepstow and the villages either side of the Wye

Chepstow sits where the Wye runs into the Severn, and it is a town of levels. The old streets below the castle are steep and the gardens behind them are terraced — a walled strip, a step, another strip. Out towards Pwllmeyric and up the Wye the ground opens out into bigger plots with proper lawns and hedges that run to a field edge.

South and west — Pwllmeyric and Mathern

The Caldicot side, a mile or so out. Flatter, more sheltered ground than the town, and the sort of garden where a decent lawn is the main event and the hedge keeps the wind off it.

Up the Wye — St Arvans

North on the Tintern road, tucked under the wooded slope. Steep, shaded gardens where moss in the lawn and leaves in the autumn are the two jobs that come round every year.

The hill villages — Shirenewton, Mynydd-bach and Itton

West up onto the ridge. Bigger rural gardens, more exposure, and hedges that do real work. Rougher grass than the town, and often a paddock edge to hold a line against.

Over the bridge — Sedbury and Tutshill

Worth saying plainly, because it catches people out: NP16 crosses the river. Sedbury and Tutshill are in Gloucestershire, on the English bank, with Chepstow postcodes and Chepstow shops. Same round, same prices — the border is not a thing I charge for.

Two things shape the year here. Being this close to the Severn, the growing season runs long and the last cut of the year is later than it is inland. And the wooded slopes above the town mean autumn leaf clearing is a bigger job than the garden size suggests — off lawns, off paths before they go slippery, and out of the borders. Winter and early spring are for cutting hedges back hard, outside the nesting season; the rest of the year is the steady round from the first cut of spring onwards.

My garden is terraced and steep. Is that a problem?

No — it is the normal shape of a garden below the castle. Terraced strips, steps and walls are what Chepstow gardens are, and the work is keeping each level tidy rather than fighting the shape.
