Your gardener in Ross-on-Wye and the Wye-side villages

Ross-on-Wye is built on a sandstone bluff above a loop of the river, and a lot of its gardens feel exactly like that to mow: proper slopes, terraces, lawns that run away downhill towards the water. The red soil off the Old Red Sandstone drains freely, the Victorian villas and terraces around the Market House and The Prospect keep their beds and hedges tight to the house, and Tudorville and the southern edge bring flatter family gardens.

East of town, Weston under Penyard, Lea and Linton line the old Gloucester road under Penyard's woods — drier ground, bigger vegetable plots, and hedges that front the main road.

Steep lawns are the local speciality — the right mower and the right line matter more here than anywhere else I work. Near the river, the Wye Valley National Landscape means hedge and tree work occasionally needs a second thought — nesting season and cutting law among them — and I'll say straight out when a job needs a tree surgeon or a consent check rather than a gardener.

My lawn slopes steeply down towards the Wye — can you actually mow it?

Almost always, yes — steep lawns are half of Ross-on-Wye. I size the mower to the slope and cut across the face rather than up and down it. If a bank is genuinely past mowing, I'll say so and suggest what to do with it instead.

Does hedge or tree work near the river come with rules I should know about?

Sometimes. Trees in the Wye Valley National Landscape and in conservation areas can need notice or consent before major work — routine hedge trimming rarely does. I'll flag anything that needs checking before I cut.
